APPLICATIONS

APPLICATIONS
Applications are open monthly. Open and close times can be found HERE. These applications are used largely for getting to know your characters, their starting powers, and their canons for plotting purposes — for this reason, we ask that you post them in the body of the comment, rather than as a link. Please format subject line with: CHARACTER NAME | CANON NAME | RESERVED / NOT RESERVED.

Players may invite one person per application round. Reserves are not required to apply. All word limits are recommendations, not hard limits. Prospective players may not submit more than two applications per round.

APPLICATIONS ARE CURRENTLY CLOSED.

Applications will open on March 25th at 5PM EST.

Current Characters:
Who Invited You?:
Character —
Character Name: Given name, then surname.
Character Canon: The English language title of your character's canon.
Character Age: Please list both chronological, mental, and physical if different.
Canon Point: When in canon is your character coming from?
Link to History: If your character is an OC, please link to a journal entry describing their history or describe it here.
Inventory: What items will your character have with them? Do not feel obligated to note worn items unless they have a special ability.
Powers —

Skills: Anything that falls within the realm of normal human ability, no matter how highly trained and refined, goes here. These might be skills that will be helpful for game plots, etc., or that flesh out character background.

Superpowers: In a numbered list, please describe the basic nature and function of your character's superhuman abilities. You should refer to the type/origin of power (i.e., is it genetic?) as well as general presentations and applications of the power.

Characters can come by powers in canon, or they can acquire powers through the confluence. If you need help brainstorming powers, try the random power feature on the Superpower Wiki.

Remember, we have a maximum of four superpowers per character. Our only blanket power nerfs are on dimensional travel; however, depending on the type of power, we may require permissions posts and player plots for the use of certain powers, as appropriate.

Limitations: Please take the time to explain your character's weaknesses and how they could be defeated or harmed by other characters here. All characters must have vulnerabilities; if canon provides you with none, please add some.

Personality —
Please EITHER (1) Summarize your character's personality — including motivations, behaviors, and psychology — in 300-600 words OR (2) Respond to the questions below.

  • What were your character's most formative experiences?: Please list the 3-5 most important moments in your character's life, drawing from either canon or (if relevant) any CRAU history. Briefly explain how these moments influenced the character's personality and motivations to make them who they are today. Aim for under 400 words. Please write this section with the assumption that the mods are not canon-familiar. CRAU characters should clearly state the name and premise of their former game.

  • What values, morals, and/or philosophies does your character live by, and how are those beliefs demonstrated? What happens when they have to compromise what they believe in? Aim for 100-200 words.

  • What is your character afraid of? How does avoiding or preventing these fears influence their actions and decisions? Aim for 100-200 words.

  • What goals does your character have right now? What do they want, and how do they go about getting it? Aim for 100-200 words.

  • Gameplay —
Areas of Interest / Brainstorming: How do you see your character's motivations translating to the game setting? What goals do you see them pursuing, or what areas of the game interest you for them? What personal and interpersonal conflicts are you interested in this character dealing with? Note: this section will not be used in evaluating the application, but as a way of surveying player interest.
Samples: Give us a link or two to threads that you feel demonstrate how you write the interpretation that you've provided here. We ask that any threads linked be from within the past two years and unlocked.

  • azem's soul stone

  • job stones for white mage, dark knight, and crafting classes (if necessary)

  • linkpearl

  • her chocobo, raeshe

  • miscellaneous healing items, and adventuring gear/snacks, including gyashl greens

  • Inventory: What items will your character have with them? Do not feel obligated to note worn items unless they have a special ability.
    Powers —

    Skills:
  • crafter — as an adventurer, the warrior of light has picked up a number of handy crafting skills like leatherworking, carpentry, and weaving. she can do moderate smithing such as weapons repairs and materia melding.

  • Superpowers:
  • 01. white mage — as a white mage, the warrior of light can heal wounds of all kinds using her own light-aspected aether. this includes illness like poisons, but also injuries like broken bones and cuts. she cannot heal missing limbs, and while she has a resurrection spell, she cannot bring people back from total death narratively. to this end, i will be limiting her resurrection ability to only people she reaches within a minute of their death. she also has a few offensive magical spells as a result of her white mage abilities, also drawn from aether reserves.

  • 02. dark knight — as a dark knight, shaedra draws on her own inner rage and conflict, manifesting as abilities powered by dark-aspected aether. this includes some area-of-effect and line-of-sight darkness spells, but also the ability to manifest a shadow clone to fight, absorb life force from others, and improve her own resilience.

  • 03. the echo the warrior of light is blessed by and connected to the primal (i.e., god) hydaelyn and has access to some of her abilities as a result, including psychometry (the ability to recall memories of people when touching an object, a person, or standing in a certain place). this functions by reading aether impressions, and at her current canon point, the warrior of light has no control over it, but she trains the skill in the future. she also has what is called the blessing of light, which gives her some considerable resistance to mind-affecting/brainwashing spells and also the ability to summon weapons of light-aspected aether. in addition, by detecting minor shifts in the aether of others, the warrior of light can predict and avoid enemy attacks.
  • Limitations:
  • mortality — despite her martial and magical prowess, the warrior of light is still just a child of man — as mortal and vulnerable as anyone else. she was bested by zenos and dragged off the battlefield by aymeric and estinien, and can be felled by a common blade.

  • compassionate — more than that, she can be neutered by threatening any of her friends, whose lives she will not risk.

  • aether — all of shaedra's abilities depend upon aether, a kind of magical life force in the world of etheirys. aether is repleted by eating and resting, like any human energy, but it also runs low when expended, and so her abilities are limited by these expenditures.

  • soul stones — as a note: mechanically, ffxiv characters are limited to one job's skills at a time by soul stones. however, npcs are seen to freely alternate between their different jobs' abilities. i am fine either way on how to handle this limitation, so just let me know what y'all think is fairer.
  • Personality —

  • What were your character's most formative experiences?:
    01. in joining the scions of the seventh dawn to combat the threat of the primals being summoned by the beast tribes, the warrior of light made a commitment to become more than an adventurer. she went from a wanderer to eorzea's champion, ascribing herself to the archons' philosophy: "to ignore the plight of those one might conceivably save is not wisdom — it is indolence." this becomes a driving force for the warrior of light as the story continues, informing their battle against the primals in a way that takes her beyond merely an adventurer who likes to fight to an adventurer who fights for something — for the allied nations of eorzea.

    02. therefore, when the scions' attempt at a unified army to defend eorzea failed, and the crystal braves turned on them for profit and revenge, it taught the warrior of light a valuable lesson about the cynicism of the world. she lost some of her idealism, her blind trust of others and belief that they would always do the right thing.

    03. her slip into cynicism crystalized when she met ysayle, an ishgardian heretic who revealed that her nation's war with the dragons was premised on a lie to hide that the humans had betrayed the dragons. as a result, shaedra lost faith in the beliefs she learned in the conjurer's guild in gridania, about peace and balance in nature, and became a dark knight, feeding off her anger at being used and betrayed.

    04. traveling to the first, an alternate universe split off from her own version of etheirys, helped shaedra regain her sense of balance and redeem herself. she became the warrior of darkness, returning night to a realm that had nothing but blinding, eternal daylight, and learned that light/dark dichotomy is arbitrarily assigned, and that all children of men contain both inside of them, and they must be kept in balance.

  • What values, morals, and/or philosophies does your character live by, and how are those beliefs demonstrated? What happens when they have to compromise what they believe in?
as mentioned above, the warrior of light lives by the philosophy "to ignore the plight of those one might conceivably save is not wisdom — it is indolence." she demonstrates these beliefs with every primal she fights, every errand she runs, every rebellion she supports against oppressors. the warrior of light does not stand idly by and let injustice continue — she does whatever she can to stop it, even at the cost of herself. if there is a way that the warrior of light can help someone, she will do it, and she has dedicated her life to it.

  • What is your character afraid of? How does avoiding or preventing these fears influence their actions and decisions?
the warrior of light is chiefly afraid of the notion that her enjoyment of violence (e.g., fighting primals) might make her a monster. she sees in herself a darkness, recklessness. she acts without thinking, especially in anger, and she fears that it will get the better of her and make her disappoint the community that has come to depend on her — in short, she's afraid that she does not measure up to being eorzea's champion. to avoid this outcome, she will overtax herself in the pursuit of helping others, charging headlong into danger even with little hope of success. she also tries to stay reserved and let other, more experienced scions handle diplomacy.

  • What goals does your character have right now? What do they want, and how do they go about getting it?
the warrior of light's main goal following the end of shadowbringers is the elimination of the ascian threat to summon zodiark. to do this, she first emphasizes compassion — she tries to persuade ascians like emet-selch and elidibus away from their efforts to summon zodiark and rejoin the multiple facets of etheirys. even when it becomes clear that the ascians cannot be reasoned out of their ideals, she studies their history in the unsundered world of amaurot, trying to understand their plight during the final days, reflecting on their culture and what was lost, and keeping her promise to emet-selch to remember them.

  • Gameplay —
    Areas of Interest / Brainstorming:
i honestly have no idea!!! obviously the warrior of light will be joining the guardian alliance with the hopes of helping out this world and investing in it. she has a strong affinity towards multiverse/dimension travel storylines because of shadowbringers, so she may poke at the age-old "how to get home" question or i might run some "mad scientist tries to break into alternative dimension" or "void beings from other dimension arrive" player plots, but these are just loosey goosey possibilities. mostly she's the kind of character who will be just as happy saving cats from trees as stopping the apocalypse, so i'm going to look at how to flip that slice-of-life button back and forth.

    Character —
    Character Name: Josh "Elixir" Foley
    Character Canon: Marvel 616
Character Age: 24 (ish) comic ages are weird
Canon Point: Uncanny X-Men 2019, after the attack on the Hellfire Mansion
    Link to History: Canon
    CRAU history
Inventory: His Black Bishop costume, nothing else
    Powers:

skills: Josh has all of the medical know-how of Hank McCoy, aka Beast, thanks to a psychic download. He's also fairly well versed in hand-to-hand combat.

    power 01. Biokinesis.

In canon, Josh is what's known as an OMEGA LEVEL MUTANT - meaning that there is currently no scope for how strong his powers will grow. He's able to alter the human body on a genetic level, allowing him to heal injuries, reverse the damage done by unnatural mutations, and even revive the dead. He does not need to touch anyone and can project a healing field for miles, healing everyone within it on a genetic level.

Josh can heal people without needing to touch them. The further away from him you are, though, the less effective his healing is.

  • In his GOLD FORM, Josh can also regenerate himself almost as quickly as injuries are inflicted upon him. This means he could tank through direct attacks and instantly heal from the damage, eventually, the strain of fixing that damage would catch up with him and he'll collapse.

Josh has complete control over his own biology. This has pros and cons: while he can heal himself in this form, he can't be healed by external forces. If he pushes himself too far or is too badly injured, he'll drop into a coma until his body has recovered enough to wake from it. External forces are not able to cure him.

  • LEAD FORM. To contrast the healing, Josh can also cause harm. Josh's abilities aren't truly defined as healing, as in repairing the damage that has been caused. It's biokinesis. The ability to manipulate the human body on a genetic level.

He's demonstrated the ability to create cancer where there was none, to draining the life out of people around him, to creating specialty made tumors. He could jack someone's body temperature up to a brain-melting level or reconfigure someone's genetic structure to include a deadly allergy to the sun. Or he could give someone he really doesn't like a cold.

Josh does not use these abilities lightly and any use of them will be run by other players.

In addition, he can't heal in this form. Josh cannot heal at the same time he's inflicting harm.

I'm fine with any additional limitations the mods want to put on his abilities - the ability to instantly kill people is stupidly overpowered and needs to be nyxed immediately.

  • BIOKINETIC SENSES. Josh can sense the health and abnormalities in the bodies of the people around him. He's able to pick up on Monet's parasitic brother, on Sabretooth's inversion, and Magneto's general fragility. Consider it something akin to standard telepathy, except instead of thoughts, he's picking up on biological feedback. He seems to be able to sense the 'emotions' of the illnesses and abnormalities he's curing as well.

  • Weaknesses & Limitations: This is more than a little overpowered and as such, I'll be placing costs on his abilities. Josh uses his own energy when he heals, meaning that he has to stop and recharge after doing so. While using his powers on individual people is largely fine, trying to affect multiple people at once will be an enormous drain on him. If he exhausts himself enough, he'll collapse into a death-like coma state.

Josh will also be unable to instant-kill any other metahumans. Affecting them negatively will required direct and prolonged touch.

He's unable to affect anything inorganic.

As Josh's abilities are inherently invasive, none will be used without any permission. Permission can be granted over here by filling out the form.

    Personality —
    Josh Foley is a trainwreck.

He's gone from a wanna-be thug, to a prep, to an outcast, to a zen healer, to an apathetic mess. His character development has been one long conga-line of trauma, ending with a face-heal turn to villainy.

To start off what hasn't changed about him over the years: He's naturally charismatic and charming. People are drawn to him despite some of the worse traits of his personality always being on display - and it's a good thing for him because Josh isn't great at being alone. Whether it be a deep and intimate friendship or just another person to be near, Josh needs people. He's never managed to figure out the hang of just enjoying his own company.

Josh isn't passive. The second he got his powers he was reaching out to help everyone in need. With his own helplessness staring him in the face after the death of his classmates, he goes to the Stepford Cuckoos and has them download all of Beast's knowledge of medicine and anatomy into his mind to ensure he'll never be helpless in the face of death again. Even when he tries to retreat from the world, he's unable to stand on the sidelines when push comes to shove.

Which is really the core of his personality - Josh likes being of service. He likes being able to do good. Being able to heal people has always brought joy to him. While his feelings on the full scope of his powers are... complicated, Josh appreciates the chance to make people's lives better and easier. He has a habit of forgiving people for hurting him or screwing him over, so long as they're safe and well in the end. There are limits to this kindness now - he's finally had enough of mutantkind being abused and has thrown in his lot with the Brotherhood, after all his attempts to escape the shadow of the X-Men backfired.

Josh struggles with controlling his temper. He's prone to lashing out in times of stress. It was worse as a teenager as he would often immediately launch into verbal attacks or even physical ones. That's lessened as an adult, but in times of great stress, he's prone to moodswings and violently lashing out with his powers.

It's his temper that Cyclops and Shadowcat fear could turn him into the next Magneto.

And to be frank, they aren't wrong too.

While he initially refused to use his powers for harm, the time serving on the X-Force wore him down. He sought Logan out for advice on how to live with killing only comes out of it understanding that sometimes it just has to be done. Monsters aren't born, they're made. Despite his efforts to fight against it - embracing Buddhism and yoga to try to work on his temper, recusing himself from field work with the other X-Men, developing flirtations and physical relationships with other students to distract himself - Josh has come to accept the necessity of using force and causing death.

His time in Mask or Menace allowed him to gain a sense of stability, and knowing Krakoa is just around the corner prevents him from becoming too bitter or apathetic. That might be all that's staving off a descent into villainy.

    Gameplay —
Areas of Interest / Brainstorming: Josh is coming in still missing memories of his legal guardian / adoptive mother, Danielle Moonstar. He'll be searching for a means to regain those memories as well as anything his friends sacrificed.

He has no interest in returning home and will immediately begin trying to secure a life for himself here. He'll also most likely sign up with the Society of Villainous Reformation and ask them to forge credentials so he can work as a doctor under a civilian identity. Josh will be reluctantly hiding his status as a mutant / metahuman in fear that the attention it would bring to him might result in his friends being hurt or killed.

Other than that, Josh will be heavily invested in what this world knows about multi-dimensional travel.
