SETTING ENGAGEMENT

SETTING ENGAGEMENT

BLANKET PERMISSIONS

Players do not have to ask permission to thwart or cause villainy. Our assumption is that as this is a superhero game in a world where superpowered people have existed for decades, daily life is going to involve supervillains and general mayhem.

Examples of things that do not require permission or engagement requests.

You develop an NPC villain for a log! This villain doesn't cause any major damage or many casualties. Maybe they have a de-aging ray, they give people temporary amnesia, turn people temporarily into animals, etc. You are welcome to use these for temporary effects.

Your character steals anything up to 5000 dollars. You can assume that they got away with this, or if they were caught, the guild paid law enforcement to look the other way.

Your character uses their powers to heal or change another character or player created NPC. This is a superhero game after all. We expect you to be using your powers and testing them.

Your character invents a tiny teleporter that jumps between their house and their friends house. This technology exists and is normalized in this world. We encourage players to create their own systems like this.

You are welcome to have your characters interact with the game's NPCS at any time.

SETTING ENGAGEMENT

The Metaheroes setting is designed to be interacted with. Our approach to this is best compared to a tabletop roleplay system. Your character will take an action and the mod team will provide you with the outcome of that action.

You do not need to pre-plan these actions. You're free to approach us as they evolve in threads to ask the consequences of your characters actions. Some of these consequences will be immediate, and others will appear down the line. Some may be expanded into full blown player plots.

Your character kills someone. If they're a hero, are they reporting themselves to the authorities? The mod team needs to know how your character is handling the body.

Your character tries to use their powers to heal, harm, manipulate a Mod NPC.

You want your character to dismantle a major crime syndicate.

You want your character to develop a following / a cult / etc.

You want your character to steal everyone's left shoe.

You want your character to enter a pact with a God and become their champion.

You want your character to gain power and influence.

You want your character to learn the magic native to the setting.

A character or group of characters stage(s) participate in a conflict that destroys a city block. There may be fallout, fines, and a loss of public favor for this.

You want your character to open up a business.

A character or group of characters engage with a mod-run NPC character, guild, or business. The NPCs will react accordingly and their opinion of your character will change.

A character uses a baby ray on important political figures to take over the tri-state area. You need to inform the mods to find out whether or not you're successful or if you're thwarted by Perry the Platypus.

Please note that these engagements are developed as ongoing storylines. We gently discourage players to rush to a conclusion as they're designed to be evolving based on character actions. We'd like to know how your characters are reacting, what actions they're taking, etc. We encourage reporting back to us with any developments or changes your characters are making to their approach, we will adjust the plot and add new elements accordingly.

To better keep track of these engagements, please reply to the corresponding monthly top level. You can continue to reply to that comment thread if your plot extends out from the month it begins in. Or you can begin a new one and link to the previous one if it helps you better track your character's specific movements through the months.

EVENT FOLLOW UP & SETTING INVESTIGATION

There are a number of mysteries for players to solve. Most events have an investigative element that requires player collaboration to uncover.

An example of some mysteries currently unsolved are:

What really happened to Starstruck?
Who was the person who hacked the Expo exhibits?
What caused the first confluence?
Who and what brought you all here?
What exactly are the flowers in Sunset Falls? Are they here to stay?

To ensure that this is visible to all players and isn't lost in the shuffle, there is a dedicated toplevel to investigations HERE. Please reply to this comment.

MOD PERMISSION REQUESTS

Actions that will significantly affect or impact the game must be run by the mod team before being introduced into play.

These would be things that alter the shared setting of the game environment in a way that cannot be easily ignored.

For this, we ask players to visit the PLAYER PLOT & Mod Permission page. Below is an example of actions that go beyond consequence reporting or investigation. You can use this page to develop a plot in this direction, but these actions cannot be taken until approval has been given.

A character is killed and not revived two hours after their death. Characters will still revive after this happens. However, this must be brought to the mod team.

Your character installs surveillance equipment around town that would allow them to spy on NPCs or player characters. This would require a permissions post and a post on the OOC comm to notify players that it has occurred.

Your character destroys established areas of the setting. Guild HQs, established landmarks, or large parts of the cities.

Your character causes mass casualties.

Your character enters an agreement with a God / Demon for power (outside of an event).

Your character kills an Mod Created NPC.

Your character kills and becomes a God.

Your character breaks Guild Law.

Your character tries to go to the Underworld.

Your character attempts to destabilize the guilds or government.

These actions are still doable! However, as they may greatly impact the setting and may count as mini events, we ask players submit them on the Player Plot page.

Would it be possible for Jason (as Red Hood) to tap into Society resources to do a thorough background check on Kaz's potential foster families and not have the Society ask too many questions on why he's doing it?

He wants to help out Kaz but he doesn't want the Society to get suspicious on why scary crime lord Red Hood is looking up on these seemingly random people as it might lead the Society to his civilian identity.

Ahaha, hello again mods!

I have an update/edit regarding schoolness for "Othello von Ryan."

Now that I've actually gotten around to him trying to figure out more about his Confluence-given ability and his brother's finding out about it, Leo's suggested Donnie can actually learn how to control his newfound power at school, and it seems more appealing than randomly getting your brain stuck inside a computer while trying to figure things out (or you know, almost accidentally shutting off your esper-acquaintance's assisted brain power).

SO. While Donnie won't mention his natural mystic-tech abilities, he will put down (I'm assuming there's some kind of field for super-abilities etc.) Tactile Computer Interfacing.

I wasn't sure if this would affect or change anything (make more fun trouble) but I figure it couldn't hurt to make mention either. 8]

Checking back in here to say thanks! We've got a log up for this and that very spicy fallout. Accelerator will be bringing some expensive equipment back to the Society for the guild's cut, and informing Leo and Donnie of what Mechanima said to him. Leo will then be telling Huvrye since at least one responsible adult should know about this. I'm not sure how things will shake out from there but it's very exciting!

Character Name: Jason Todd ([personal profile] robintohood) and Kaz ([personal profile] kazimieras)
Character Alignment: Jason is part of the Society while Kaz is part of the Alliance
Summary of Actions Taken: Right after seeing Kaz's network post, Jason (as Red Hood) goes to talk to Johnny. He asks them if they could help him do thorough background checks on Kaz's potential foster families and to keep it a secret. It's a personal project and he doesn't want anyone to snoop, including other Society members. Jason also makes it a point to tell Johnny he's willing to do them a favor in exchange for their secrecy.

OOC Goals & Intended Outcome: Jason's trying to help Kaz find a safe home while protecting his secret identity from the kid and protecting his civilian identity from the Society.

school questions!

1. Since Central City's on lockdown now, how is Sky High Lofty Heights handling some of their students being on a villain-induced lockdown? Are they providing long-distance learning, or...?

2. For Tim specifically, he basically buckled down and started attending school a few weeks before the lockdown happened, so like... at most he'll have managed under two months of school, depending on when Lofty Heights' last day is and if he's still doing school under the lockdown. He's a smart cookie and a perfectionist and fears bad grades, so he's probably doing about as well as possible under the circumstances, but would that be enough? Or would they want him in some kind of summer school program before letting him through to the next grade?

Ammy is getting housing and a bank account through the Alliance currently. She may switch over to the Society depending how things pan out in the future.

She'll do the interview properly. Her resume includes a very nice cover letter with a tastefully chosen typeface detailing her intent to help restore and maintain the natural beauty of Sunset Falls' parks and explains her history of dealing with various issues both supernatural and otherwise.

For her work experience, she lists Protecting all of Nippon: unk. BCE - March 2023 CE

She'll insist on a proper interview because it makes more more work for Loki, though she won't actually mention that part.

She's also been wearing a bowtie since the law was passed.

Character Name: Dana Tan/the mysterious new brainwashed villain Flashstep
Character Alignment: Unaligned
Summary of Actions Taken: Dana's had her brainwashing activated and started a villain career as a teleporting thief known as Flashstep. She mostly attempts flashy heists of valuables kept in visible places, like museums. While her goals aren't violent, she uses her teleporting to take hostages and place them in dangerous locations in the process of her heists. Of course she's always stopped by Fantastic before anyone gets seriously hurt or anything gets stolen.

Dana as herself has started to notice minor injuries from the heists, usually in the form of sore limbs or fabric burns from Fantastic seizing her and worrying about the lost time. She's been given a tracker by Jason Todd, but as she dumps everything in a secret location before becoming Flashstep, it won't directly link Dana to the crimes in progress. Still, she and he will be watching for missing time episodes.

OOC Goals & Intended Outcome: Just OOCly establishing what brainwashed!Dana has been doing even if I don't make any public posts about it, at least until June, when I'm thinking of making a post of Fantastic foiling Flashstep when she escalates and tries to destroy an occupied building while denouncing him.

If Tim already has the knowledge to make an anon message board on an internet freedom/piracy friendly website, is there a SEALAND, Liberia, .il, .ru for him to use?

Would the creation of this need to be approved as a plot?

[personal profile] reneger 2023-05-26 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Character Name: Jason Todd [personal profile] reneger
Character Alignment: Unaffiliated
Summary of Actions Taken: Jason, as Mal Richards, is going to be investigating NYC's crime networks. He'll be looking specifically into drug rings and weapon trading, and will be throwing around cash at dealers to help get his name well-known around those parts. Luckily, he still has some of the stolen cash from when he'd fucked over the D'Amicos in Central City, and some of the weapons they'd stolen off of them, too, so he's already well-equipped to start fucking with NYC's crew. Every runner/dealer he can reasonably bug, he'll be bugging. It won't be consistently every person Jason comes across, because he knows that'd catch on quick once they started finding them, but it'll be consistent enough to (hopefully) help him figure out where they're going, what they're getting up to, etc.

He will be working on building a relationship with runners who come across as less stupid than others, because having the little guys on his side is never a bad idea. And Jason will make sure that the fact he is one of the Starfallen isn't made apparent; he's just a normal dude, making friends. Nothing to see here.

Basis of this being: Jason's digging his fingers into crime because it's what he does best.

OOC Goals & Intended Outcome: His eventual goal is to work his way up to getting the names of the higher-ups within those networks, so he can take them down and replace them with people he thinks are better for those spaces. He will, eventually aim to overtake them entirely, but that's something he'll work up to. It's hard to be a crimelord when he's lacking in resources, so he'll take his time getting there.

This is just set up for later! Let me know if more details are needed. It'd be cool to get some details about gangs/people I can throw into tags, too.

Character Name: Sephiroth and Loki
Character Alignment: Unaligned and Alliance, respectively
Summary of Actions Taken: ICly discussed here, Loki and Sephiroth are thinking of getting inside the Central quarantine by using Loki's illusion powers to sneak past whatever low-level Society grunts may be watching the roads. Assuming they're successful in slipping through, the plan is to search for and investigate any leads on the Fixer, following the name and utilizing Sephiroth's knowledge of the timeline of his memory lapses.
OOC Goals & Intended Outcome: At the least, I'm thinking this could put them in Central when the remaining brainwashees are wrecking havoc, so if other leads come up dry they can be involved that way. I'm not sure if any memories from Sephiroth's lost time could be triggered, but that could be interesting.

I also expect there could be some consequences with the Society if they're discovered breaking quarantine.

Character Name: Doreen Green ([personal profile] eatsnutsandkicksbutts) / Felonious Fox, her brainwashed villainous alter-ego!
Character Alignment: Unaligned
Summary of Actions Taken: Doreen's been Manchurian Candidate'd, and has been waking up with weird bruises and memory lapses. If it's cool, I'm gonna say one of the first things she did as a villain was suckerpunch one of the lesser-known Alliance heroes in order to steal an image inducer, so she can disguise herself more effectively. As a villain, she is a total ham who mostly specializes in robberies and cat burglary - think using her claws to cut through windows, chewing through locks on doors (it's gross, but she can bite through metal!) and acrobatting her way through laser grid security systems. Fantastic could foil her every time, but Doreen would be less hesitant about using her super strength against him, so there would likely be some heavy fistfights and property damage!

OOC Goals & Intended Outcome: Like Dana up above, I'm backdating some of Doreen's villainous activity before things go off the rails next month!
